This entry has been written from the view point of someone who has never been to any Disney theme park, not even Disneyland Paris.
It is also my first holiday in the US, and although I have spent two weeks in eastern Canada, I expect that the experience will be very different.
I would also like to point out that this holiday is being spent with my pregnant wife and two children under the age of ten, and so it is very unlikely that we will be experiencing any of the major thrill rides, which to be honest is no loss as far as I am concerned anyway. |
Star Tours has apparently been at Hollywood studios for at least twenty years and is a ride inspired by Steven Spielberg's blockbusting movie series Starwars. As you approach it you first notice the full size AT-AT looming over you and an entrance to a rebel base below it, at various times during the day (refer to the Times Guide) a show is put on in front of the rebel base where children can train, under the tuition of a Jedi master to become a Jedi warrior.

Walking through the trees and beneath the AT-AT brings you to the entrance to the Star Tours ride itself, as with virtually all Disney attractions the queuing system is very efficient, on the odd occasion too efficient. Entering the building containing the ride you find yourself in the rebel maintenance bay with a shuttle craft being worked on by R2D2 and fellow droids, C3PO is all a flap on a gantry overlooking the bay, you pass through the bay and on into a droid workshop were an R2 unit is repairing another droid, then you arrive at a space departure lounge.
When we went on the ride it was early in the morning, and there wasn't really any queue what so ever, so we found ourselves rushing through something that looking back at I could quite easily have wandered through at a much slower pace.
Not wanting to ruin the ride for anyone who hasn't ridden it before, a brief synopsis of the ride is thus.
You board a shuttle that should be taking you on an intergalactic journey, unfortunately you have boarded the only shuttle to have a droid pilot that has never flown before. The ride will take you on a journey that on more than occasion brings you far too close to the Empire for your own comfort.
When you leave the ride you will find yourself in the Starwars shop, a trick a lot of rides deploy, but in most cases it only acts to delay going out into heat of the day by a few minutes. As you leave the shop take your opportunity to get your photograph taken on a speeder bike.
